Pack up

今夜中の12時過ぎ。明日の朝日本に行くので、今荷造りをしています。息子は昨日からお友達のところにお泊りで、夜10時に迎えに行き、それからステーキを焼いて二人で食べ、今荷造り。。。随分のん気なものです。空港まではお友達が送っていってくれます。空港まで30分というのは随分ラクになりました。以前は2時間だったから、結局ホテルに前泊していたからね。今日で息子との二人生活ともお別れ。似たもの同士の私たちはよく大喧嘩になるので、先に旅立った主人の申し送りは「お互いケンカしないように」でした。ま、大きなケンカもなく、案外楽しくやりました。それじゃ、みなさん、日本で~。。。

It's past midnight, and we just started packing up for tomorrow. This time we take Korean Air to Japan. We are always last minute people. My son came home from his friend's house where he slept over past 10:00, then we prepared steak and ate it, and now just started with packing. So the "sweet" life of two of us will end as of today. It's nice that we did not have any BIG fight (since we two are alike in many ways, sometimes we go head-to-head). I would say we enjoyed each other keeping a comfortable distance. Now I am ready to see the other half of my family.

Audition passed

中学校でとっていたサマーバンドのクラスも今日で終わり（ホントはあと一週間あるけれど、彼は日本に帰るので今週でおしまい）。秋からのジャズバンドに正式に入隊するためのオーディションがありました。結果は無事合格。楽譜を読むのも少しずつ慣れました。即興もあったけど、案外得意みたい。本格的に活動しだすと、学校関連のイベントやコンサートのほか、結婚式で雇われバンドとして演奏したりもするらしい。これからの活動が楽しみです。本人はいいギターを買えるので楽しみにしています。（先生からいいギターを買うよう申し付かって本人はホクホク。親はヘナヘナ。）

Today was his last day of the summer band camp at the middle school. He had the audition for Fall Jazz band, and he passed it. Yeah! A part of the audition was improvisation, but he was pretty good at it, it seems. His sight reading has been improving, too. The band will be performing in school related events and concerts, and on top of that they will be hired for wedding and other ceremonies, I heard. The teacher strongly recommended he gets new better (translation; more expensive) guitar, and he is so happy with it, since he had been trying to persuade us parents how he deserves a better guitar. Coming out of the teacher's mouth, we probaly need to listen to it.

Drama night

このごろは息子とふたりでドラマ・ナイト。このサムライ・ハイスクールというのにふたりではまっています。今日は吉野家の牛丼、ソファーで食べながら見ちゃった。いいねえ、こういうの、普段はできないから、トクベツ。。。ふたりだけっていうのもちょっと寂しいけど、案外楽しくもある。

My son and I are into this drama called Samurai High School. We check out the DVD's, pick up beef bowls on the way home, turn on the TV, sit on the sofa, and here we go. It's a drama dinner. We don't have this luxury when schools are in. It's a nice change.

Band instruments

息子が毎日バンドに持っていく楽器を紹介します。こちらは1時間目のビギナーズ・バンド用のベルキット。ザイロフォン（金属の木琴）とドラムパッドとスタンドとスティックと楽譜たてが入ったセット。これを持って学校に行ってまた持って帰ってくる。

There are the instruments my son takes to school for band classes everyday. This one above is called a bell kit. It has Xylophone, a drum pad, sticks, a stand and score sheet holder.



こちらは3時間目（２時間目は関係ない授業）のジャズバンド用のギター。ジャスバンドのほうが本命であります。木曜日のオーディションがあり、うまくいったら正式に入隊できるけど、ちっとも練習してないよ。日本だと楽器は学校のものを使わせてくれたりするけど、このあたりは全部自前。ベルキットは200ドルで買いました。ジャスバンドも入隊できたら、もっといいギターを買うように先生に言われています。1000ドルくらいかなあ。案外お金がかかります。でもフレンチホーンとかだと4000ドルぐらいだというので、それよりはいいけど。。。

This one is his guitar for jazz band. Jazz band is what he really wants to do. He is going to have an audition which he needs to pass to be officially admitted into the band. I've been telling him to practice, but he keeps procrastinating. Students are supposed to have their own instruments. We paid $200 for the bell kit, and if he passes the jazz band audition, he was told by his teacher to get a "better" guitar (the one he has been using is a very beginner one). Bands could be pretty expensive. Probably we are much better off compared to someone who does, say, a french horn, which runs up to $4,000 if you but it.

Japanese drama

普段はあんまりテレビを見る暇はないけれど、夏休みだからと近くのビデオ屋で何気なく借りたドラマにはまりました。5年ほど前に「白い巨塔」にも夫婦ではまって一気に見たけれど、こちらは同じ山崎豊子作の「不毛地帯」。同じく唐沢寿明の熱演でやめられなくなりました。パパと娘はもともとすでに日本。そのうえ、今日は息子が友達の家にお泊りに行ってしまったので（行ってくださったので）、わたくしひとりきり。。。。今日、最終回まで一気に見るぞ～。。。

I usually do no have much time to watch TV, but it's summer time after all. I checked couple Japanese dramas in a rental video store. I am now into this drama series, and cannot stop watching it. With my husband and daughter already gone back to Japan, and with my son gone to sleep over tonight in his friend's house, this is the perfect night to watch it through to the end! Hooray!

Ball game

お友達のお父さんが息子をプロ野球の試合に連れて行ってくれました。男の子を4人連れて。。。エンジェルス対マリナーズでエンジェルスが勝ったそう。松井は不調ででませんでしたが、イチローは見たそうです。息子にとってははじめてのプロ野球！写真とってきてね～といったら、この写真。自分たちが入った写真があればいいのにねえ。しかも選手も写ってないじゃん。芝生だけ。。。ま、これが彼の席からのビューということです。こんなのってきっとすごく楽しいのだろうね。夜10時過ぎに帰ってきて、4人のうちふたり（ひとりはうちの息子だけど）はうちでそのままお泊り。今朝10時だけど、まだ寝ています。

A dad of my son's friend's took him for a ball game. He invited two more boys and thus took four boys altogether. It was Angeles vs. Mariners. Matsui did not play since he was not doing well this season, but Ichiro was there. This is the first ball game my son has ever been to. I asked him to take couple pictures, and he sent me this one. Well, I was expecting one with the boys in... I guess this is the view from his seat. They came home past 10:00 pm, and two of them (one being my son) stayed over in our place. Now it's 10:00 am next morning, but they are still sleeping (in the living room). I am sure it's been a day of huge excitement.

Pool party

このごろ息子のお友達の住んでいるゲイテッド・コミュニティー（塀で囲まれた中に家が建っていて、共同のプールやスポーツ施設が整っているところ。ゲートがあって部外者は簡単に出入りできない。）のプールに連日泳ぎに行っています。子どもが何人も集まって皆で泳いだりジャクジーに入ったり。その間親はテーブルでおしゃべり。このあたりは、自分のうちにプールがあるか、あるいはプールのあるコミュニティーかアパートに住んでいないと、すぐ遊びにいけるプールがないので、こうやって一緒に誘ってもらうのはありがたい。。。

This is my son's buddies in a Jacuzzi in one of his friend's neighborhood pool. We do not have a pool nor live in a neighborhood with a community pool, so we need to get invited like this to enjoy pool. Parents sit at the pool side table and enjoy the conversation. Nice way to pass a summer evening.



フラッシュするとこんなかんじ。次の朝みんなサマースクールやバンドがあるけれど、夜10時まで遊んでいた。ま、夏休みだもん、よろしいでしょ。

It looks like this with a flush. They stayed until 10 am, even though most of them have a summer school or band class starting at 8 or 9 am next morning. It's summer after all. We just relax and enjoy the life.
