このところ、雨続き。かれこれ４，５日。しかも、バケツをぶちまけたような降り方。このあたりは、雨がふるということを想定してモノが作られていないので、雨が振ると道も公園も庭もプールになっちゃう。It's been raining for days. It rains on and off, and when it does, it does cats and dogs. Nothing around here had been build with rain in assumption, so even moderate rain results in swimming pools everywhere.
こちらは我が家の庭。家をとってみても、まず雨どいがない。ノキもあまりない。おそらく土地の傾斜や整地もちゃんと考えられていない。しかも、ドアのしたの雨よけ（雨風が入ってくるのを防ぐゴム製のもの）もないので、雨がひどいとすぐ内側まで浸水する。This is our backyard. Most of the houses here do not have gutters. The land grading has not been taken seriously apparently. Doors do not have weather strips either, so even moderate rain gets inside the house easily.
道路は、まるで水はけを考えてつくられられていないので、すぐにウォータースライダー状態。しかも、カリフォルニア人は雨の中を運転することに慣れていないので、雨降りの運転は自他ともにスリル満点よ。早くお日さまに会いたいよ。Drainage is a dead word when they build streets and roads. When you drive in rain, you feel like you are in those water sliders in theme parks. Californians are not used to driving in rain to begin with, so it is super thrilling to be on the road. We need sunshine!
